Electricity and Gas Network Relief Package for SMEs

Written by Energy Action

Energy Action welcomes the launch of Energy Network Australia’s COVID-19 Electricity and Gas Network Relief Package designed to support small businesses and residential customers impacted by COVID-19.

Energy Networks Australia, the national industry body for energy networks, said that networks will be deferring or rebating electricity and gas network charges for affected customers.

Energy Networks Australia CEO Andrew Dillon said: “Networks understand these are extraordinarily tough times for small business and energy bill relief will really help.”

As part of the package, energy networks across New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia* will implement measures including:

  • Small Businesses: Full tariff relief for low business customers that have ceased operations over the period between 1 April to 30 June 2020 as a result of COVID-19. Network charges will be rebated over this period for those small businesses that consume less than 40MWh and use less than 25% of historical average consumption.
  • Residential customers: For small retailers, network charges will be rebated for residential customers that go into default as a result of COVID-19. Network charges will be deferred for residential customers of large retailers who go on payment plans or hardship arrangements. This applies to existing residential customers as at 1 April 2020, those receiving government benefits as at the same date, or that are in payment default or on hardship plans where this was not the case at 1 March 2020.

Energy Networks Australia also reiterated that it continues to operate in line with the principles outlined by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). This includes supporting retailers in not disconnecting small businesses in financial distress and waiving disconnection, connection and daily supply charges for small businesses that have ceased operations.

*Participating networks: Citipower, Powercor Australia, United Energy, Australian Gas Networks, TransGrid, Endeavour Energy, Ausgrid, Essential Energy, Jemena, SA Power Networks, Multinet Gas Networks, ElectraNet and AusNet Services.
